Key notes

1Shoot through the ring so the light surrounds the lens; this is what creates the on-axis halo shadow and the circular catchlight.
2Hold the subject 1 – 1.5m off the background so the outline shadow stays thin and intentional rather than a hard black halo.
3Add a white V-flat just outside the frame to wrap the cheeks and soften the ring’s natural specular bite on oily skin.
