Fashion
Scale that idea to a full V-flat and the whole shadow side of the body goes with it — then flip the panel to its white face and that side returns by over a stop, which is the clearest proof that subtraction and fill are one tool with a sign.

Stop subtracting from the subject and start subtracting from the beam — flags either side of a hard source draw a band you can lay exactly across the eyes, and everything outside it is simply light you refused to let through.

Food
On a still life the flag protects texture: raking light only reads as relief while nothing is filling the valleys, so opening that side lifts it nearly two stops and the crust flattens even though the key never moved.

On glass a black card is not a shadow — it is a reflection you are placing, and the dark edge that defines the bottle IS the card; take it away and that edge lifts over two stops and the shape collapses.
