How to use this tool

What it does

They do not reflect like bounce; they transmit and scatter. Effective sun size grows, shadow edge softens, contrast drops.

When to use it

Midday portraits, outdoor fashion, handheld sun lessons, overhead daylight on sets.

What to look for in the photo

Softer shadow under chin outdoors; lower contrast; scrim may be invisible if outside frame.

Placement basics

Keep scrim between sun and subject — if sun hits face directly, scrim is wrong place. Assistant holds scrim as close as comfort allows for max softness.

Distance & power

Closer scrim = softer; larger frame = more even coverage for full body. Wind = safety issue — sandbag stands.

Common mistake

Scrim off-axis so sun still strikes face edge. Fix: walk the sun line with string or shadow check on ground.

Pro tip

Open shade + reflector is the backup lesson when scrim unavailable — teach both same shoot.

Practice on set

  1. Direct sun reference (brief) for contrast.
  2. Add scrim; re-meter face.
  3. Add white bounce under chin for eye fill.
