What it does

They simulate a glowing cloud above the set; walls catch spill, so room color matters. Great for environmental portraits where ceiling bounce feel is desired on purpose.

When to use it

Living rooms, group portraits, creator apartments, overhead YouTube-style keys.

Placement basics

Hang centered above and slightly in front of subject; height trades nose shadow vs eye sparkle. Kill competing overheads.

Distance & power

Lower lantern for more eye light; raise to reduce nose shadow but watch empty sockets. Dim practicals separately in frame.

Practice on set

1. Lantern-only baseline in room.
2. Add black foam beside face for drama variant.
3. Balance practical lamp in background for depth.
