How to use this tool

What it does

Shoot-through: light passes diffusion fabric. Reflective: light bounces back toward subject from a curved surface. Both spread light widely — spill control is harder than boxes.

When to use it

Beginner studios, quick portraits, event fill when space is tight, speedlight tabletop.

What to look for in the photo

Very soft shadows; round catchlights; loop lighting at 30–45° off axis for flattering portraits.

Placement basics

Shoot-through close (within 1m) for softest; silver bounce farther for more contrast. Aim center of umbrella slightly past subject to feather.

Distance & power

Close umbrella = soft + falloff fast; back wall will light up. Pull subject away from wall or flag background.

Common mistake

Trying for noir dark background with bare umbrella 2m away — spill wins. Fix: grid alternative or black flags/V-flats.

Pro tip

White interior bounce + black walls nearby = surprisingly controlled for budget studios.
