Key notes

1Set one soft source (softbox or beauty dish) directly over the lens, close to the subject, and expose for the face.
2Pull the subject well off the background — 2m or more — so no spill reaches it and the surround stays black.
3Feather or slightly restrict the source if it lifts the background; you want the light to die before it reaches the wall.
4Keep both sides of the face balanced — this is a single on-axis key, so a bright far edge means the light has drifted off to one side.
