Softbox

What it does

Spreads flash over the front diffusion panel so the apparent source is larger and shadows soften. Still directional: you aim it like a window, not like ambient.

When to use it

Portraits, interviews, product labels, corporate headshots, and spill-control lessons with grids.

Placement basics

45° off axis, feathered across face. Closer = softer; farther = more defined jaw. Add grid when background should stay charcoal.

Distance & power

Typical portrait: 0.8–1.5m from subject depending on box size. Grid costs ~1 stop — compensate or accept darker background.

Practice on set

1. Meter key only; note background brightness.
2. Add grid; compare background spill change at same power.
3. Add flag on background side if spill remains.

  Honeycomb grids snap onto softboxes and strips to kill spill while keeping the modifier’s soft character on-axis.
