Lighting setup

The lesson is the fill tool: a bounced speedlight establishes direction while a reflector or bounce card opposite the key opens the shadow side at weddings and receptions.

Kill the wall-bounce speedlight — face falls into warm reception ambient so you see what the bounce flash was buying.

Drop the handheld reflector. The wall bounce still carries her, but both sides step down — the reflector side by about a stop and a quarter — and the dual catchlight becomes one.

Base setup

Event photographers often have a great wall bounce but still lose eye sparkle on the far cheek. A handheld reflector or white card returns enough fill to hit 2:1 without a second flash, keeping the kit minimal and fast.
