How to use this tool

What to look for in the photo

Subject still soft; background noticeably darker at same power; rim lines stay crisp on strips with grids.

Placement basics

Shoot comparison frame without grid at identical power/settings. Feather same as non-grid — grid does not replace feathering.

Distance & power

Expect ~0.5–1 stop loss — raise power or open aperture. Deeper grids = more loss + more control.

Common mistake

Thinking grid makes light hard on skin like snoot. Fix: compare skin texture — grid mainly eats spill.

Pro tip

Grid on background hair light only — subject soft, environment controlled.

Practice on set

  1. Meter portrait without grid; note background EV.
  2. Add grid; match face exposure; background should drop.
  3. Flag floor if spill remains.
