Mood variations

Woman in a white ribbed tank outdoors, hard sun from camera-left with a sharp nose shadow across her cheek against green hills.

No Scrim Harsh Sun

Remove the scrim so hard noon shadows show why diffusion is the first step outdoors.

Beauty Reflector Fill

Add a white reflector below the face for open eyes and a clean commercial daylight portrait.

Negative Fill Shape

Keep the scrim overhead but add black fill on one side for a more sculpted natural-light result.

Final look

Base setup

The scrim increases the apparent size of the sun, turning harsh top light into a broad soft source. Once the hard shadow is gone, reflector fill or black negative fill can decide whether the portrait feels bright and beauty-like or sculpted and editorial.

Key notes

  • 1Hold the scrim between sun and face, not above the camera; the shadow edge on skin should disappear.
  • 2Expose for the face under the scrim and let the background go slightly bright if needed.
  • 3Use a white reflector below eye level only after the scrim is working; otherwise it just adds glare to hard sun.
  • 4Add black negative fill on one side when the scrim makes the face too even.
