Rembrandt Window Portrait

Lighting setup

A single window at camera-right lights the side of a turned face nearest the glass and leaves the side toward the camera in soft shadow; Open Fill adds white bounce camera-left to ease that shadow.

Bearded man in a dark knit sweater beside a bare window at frame-right, face turned into its light; his near cheek and ear sit in soft shadow against a concrete wall.

Base setup

One window. Turn into the light. Bounce eases the shadow.

Mood variations

Bearded man in a dark knit sweater by a bright window at frame-right, looking toward the glass, the near side of his face in gentle half-light against a concrete wall.

Open Fill

White bounce camera-left gently lifts the near cheek and jaw while the window side holds — a softer mood, not a new key.

Base setup

Turned into the window, the face takes its light on the side away from the lens while the side toward the lens falls into soft shadow — short light, which narrows the face and gives it depth. Base keeps that shadow side dark for mood; Open Fill adds a white bounce camera-left that lifts it gently while the window side holds — ratio on a locked window key, not a weather swap.

Key notes

  • 1Watch the soft patch of light under the eye nearest the camera. Turn the face a touch away from the window, or raise the light, until the nose shadow meets the cheek shadow and closes that patch into a small triangle — that is Rembrandt. Stop while that eye still holds a catchlight.
  • 2Diffuse harsh sun with a sheer curtain or frost; soft overcast "open shade" light needs no diffusion at all.
  • 3Base leaves the shadow cheek dark for mood. Open Fill puts a white bounce camera-left (off-frame) to lift that cheek gently — window key stays camera-right. Bring the card closer for a stronger lift.
  • 4Move the subject closer to the glass for softer light with faster falloff; farther away for flatter, more even light.
