How to use this tool

What it does

The beam can be spotted wider or tighter; barn doors crop the spread. Shadows stay comparatively hard because the source behaves smaller than a giant softbox. In haze, the beam becomes a physical object in the frame.

When to use it

Noir, detective blinds, theater portraits, athlete drama, and advanced lessons combining flags, haze, and rims.

What to look for in the photo

Circular or oval hot spot on background; rapid falloff to black; crisp shadow nose line; visible beam volume when haze is present.

Placement basics

Side angles 60–90° for classic noir; spotting down until shadow edge is crisp. For blind patterns, distance to blinds controls bar width. Flag the lens and hood — flare kills micro-contrast quickly.

Distance & power

Farther = harder smaller beam; closer = slightly softer but hotter center. In haze, lower key power — scatter adds perceived brightness.

Common mistake

Leaving the beam too wide so it looks like a normal hard light, not a Fresnel lesson. Fix: spot in until the pool is obvious on a grey card.

Pro tip

Shoot a grey card in the beam at your mark before the subject stands in — confirms spot size without skin clipping.

Practice on set

  1. Establish beam size on background with barn doors.
  2. Set face exposure in the pool; let outside the pool fall dark.
  3. Add minimal haze; re-meter because scatter lifts shadows.
  4. Optional gridded rim for hair separation without flooding haze.
