Fill light

The answer to the key's shadows: fill sets the ratio, and the ratio sets the mood. Measured on one face: +0.65 stops under-chin with the fill, +7.38 without — an eleven-fold difference from one card.

Fill light is the answer to the key's shadows. It does not model the face — the key already did that — it decides how dark the modelled shadows are allowed to go. That single decision, expressed as the key-to-fill ratio, is most of what photographers mean by "contrast" in a lighting setup: 2:1 reads soft and open, 3:1 reads classic, 8:1 reads dramatic. Fill is also the least glamorous light on set, which is exactly why it is the one most often set badly.

When to reach for it

Whenever the shadow side carries information you want kept: the second eye in a portrait, the label's dark side on a bottle, texture inside a shadow. Skip it — or use negative fill instead — when the shadows are the picture. The question is never "should there be fill?" but "what ratio does this face, this product, this mood need?"

How to read fill in a photograph

Meter the shadow side against the lit side, in stops. Our own library carries the cleanest demonstration we know of: the same face, the same key, with and without a lower fill. With the reflector in place (clamshell), the neck measures +0.65 stops darker than the cheeks; remove the fill (butterfly) and the same measurement reads +7.38 stops. One card, eleven-fold difference in linear light.

The second tell is the catchlight: a fill close to the lens axis adds a second, dimmer catchlight low in the iris. And if you want the ratio itself made interactive, our ratio lab lets you drag a fill against a fixed key and watch the number move — its detents at 8:1, 4:1, 3:1 and 2:1 are calibrated to the rendered pixels within three thousandths of a stop.

What people get wrong

Too much. Push the fill toward the key's power and the ratio walks to 1:1: the modelling disappears and skin starts reading flat and plastic, because nothing on the face turns away from light anymore. The fill should always read as the quieter voice.

Fill that becomes a second key. Slide the fill off-axis and it stops filling and starts modelling — now two shadow systems compete on one face. Fill belongs near the lens axis, where its shadows hide behind the key's.

Filling with power when a surface would do. A white card, a wall, a reflector — half the fills in this library are not lamps at all but bounced light, and a passive bounce physically cannot overpower the source that feeds it. That built-in modesty is a feature: it is much harder to over-fill with a card than with a second strobe.
