HSS Daylight Wide-Aperture Fashion
Lighting setup
High-speed sync flash lets an outdoor fashion portrait be shot at wide aperture under bright midday sun — the sun keys the face while HSS fill shapes the shadow side, keeping shallow depth of field with a controlled bright background.

Outrun the sun. Keep the bokeh.

- Step 6/8Speedlight on location
High-speed sync in hard sun — wide aperture with balanced flash fill.
- Step 3/7Creative flash & camera craft
HSS is not only for sunsets — in hard sun it buys wide aperture with fill that does not look like noon strobing. Watch how flash fill lifts the shadow cheek without killing the rim sun already in the hair.

Mood variations

Ambient Only Baseline
Turn flash off at the same settings — the sun still keys the face but the shadow side falls deeper, showing what the HSS fill recovers.

Flash Dominant
Raise flash power until the face is fully shaped and the background sun reads one stop under subject exposure.

Backlit Rim Mix
On the same frame, push brighter sun rim on hair and shoulder edge while HSS fill from camera-left still shapes the face — rim separation without moving the alley or pose.
Final look

Base setup
Normal flash sync caps shutter speed in daylight, forcing small apertures and deep depth of field. HSS lets you raise shutter speed past the sync limit so wide apertures stay usable; the sun keys the face while flash fill opens the shadow side, keeping f/1.8–f/2.8 bokeh available under bright sun.

Key notes
- 1Meter the sun on the face first at your target aperture — then add HSS flash to fill the shadow side to taste.
- 2Expect lower flash power in HSS mode; move the modifier closer rather than cranking ISO.
- 3Shoot a flash-off frame at the same settings to see how deep the shadow side falls before the HSS fill recovers it.
- 4Watch sun direction — backlight needs more flash power than open shade; expose for skin, not the sky alone.
